The Flower Boy and the Matchstick Girl

The Flower Boy and the Matchstick Girl

The Flower Boy and the Matchstick Girl

A boy born with leaves in his hair
Caught light between the sun and moon
Never burdens his mind with a care
And prances in grasses sipping on sparkling High Noon.

Rattling in his drum tower
Singing songs of gem stones
Sees a girl born smelling gun powder
Her power changed his voice into a vexed tone.

Her sight took the fire from the pit of the sun
And powered his stoned heart to an eternal flame
Hot breath shot through him with the force of a gun
That could hit him without taking aim.

The lovers sang the same orphic hymns
That secret chord was their shared god
Her frenzied tempo would seduce him
Into crumbling the glossy facade.

"Do you always mumble through your songs?"
She asked, peering through tangles in her eyes
The intensity behind her voice made him fawn
He said, "Soft songs hide tearful cries."

He played her fancy like an Anglo Concertina
While she danced in and out of his mind
With the lithesome grace of a drunken ballerina
His running fingers made her knotted hair shine.

The floating boy gave her room to breathe
And she poured molten silver into his open heart
Heat stirred him, but the ache to stare through clouds never ceased
How else can he see shooting comets reach the same bright star?

"You're made of flower power, I'm made of matchsticks and gasoline!
Our love shone bright, but vanished in a flash"
She said, "Our union means one will be left standing,
And the other will be burned to ash."

He said, "I don't want to wake each day searching for you”
“I breathed my first sigh looking in your indigo eyes,”
She said, "but I was born gasping with something to prove
When will you realize I can't keep looking up at clouds for you?"

These two passing comets will realize together
On that journey to reach the same twisted star
They have lain together longing for the other
Both born to lie longing for the other worlds apart.

A flower boy born with cobwebs in his hair
Lay alone in his bed and sang songs of gemstones
Dreamed of a girl he used to know born from smoke and despair
Clouds parted to reveal that twisted star that shone.
